More Than A Tagline

June 12, 2016 Speaker: Scott Oas

Topic: General Verse: Ephesians 1:2

“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” - Ephesians 1:2 (NIV)

TELL ME WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT?

AM I GOOD AT ACCEPTING GOD’S GRACE?
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.” - Romans 5:1-2 (NIV)

AM I GOOD AT LIVING IN GRACE?
“As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.” - 2 Corinthians 6:1-2, 11-13 (NIV)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

AM I GOOD AT LIVING OUT GRACE?
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” - Titus 2:11-14 (NIV)

SCRIPTURE READING: Ephesians 1:2, Romans 5:1-2

GETTING STARTED:
Taglines are those catchy, short, creative and direct phrases that stick in our minds. They are used in marketing products, directing our attention to investments etc. We have a tagline-like statement in “No Perfect People Allowed.” How have you embraced this statement and passed it on to others?

A CLOSER LOOK:

AM I GOOD AT ACCEPTING GOD’S GRACE?
Read Romans 5:1-2 : "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God."

“Faith, Peace, & Grace” How are each of these words terms of impact on these verses? What is their role & purpose and what do they collectively point to?

AM I GOOD AT LIVING IN GRACE?
Read 2 Corinthians 6:1,2,11-13
What do you think Paul means when he says, “we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain.”

From verses 11-13, what is Paul referring to when he challenges the Corinthians to “open wide their hearts.” How does an open-hearted commitment in relationship connect to “grace”? What would the opposite do?
